York Castle Museum
Travel back in time and visually experience what it was like to live in the city of York during the last three centuries. Experience life as a York Victorian by taking a stroll down Kirkgate, a recreated cobbled Victorian Street. Browse the sweet shops, pharmacies and other themed shops, chat to the theatrical actors and then enter the dark side of Victorian England in the prison cells and poverty stricken back streets.
York Castle Museum takes you through countless periods, from the Victorians to the Swinging Sixties, recreating the sights, smells and sounds of each era. The museum then takes you into the depths of the old castle prison where the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin was incarcerated. Listen to ghostly accounts of actual prisoners who were imprisoned in the exact cells in which you stand. Visit the new World War 1 exhibition: ‘When the world changed forever’. Opening on the Great War’s 100 year anniversary, you will see the impact of war and experience what it was like on the front line as well as how life significantly changed back home. Finish your visit in the large gift shop that sells a good selection of historical books and memorabilia, then relax with tea and cake in the museum café with wonderful views of Clifford’s Tower.
